Caring for your orchid.

Orchids are elegant and rewarding plants, but they require specific care, especially in unique environments like high elevations. Here’s how to keep your orchids thriving in the Rocky Mountains:

Light Requirements
Ideal Light: Orchids need bright, indirect light. At high elevations, sunlight can be intense, so avoid direct exposure, especially during midday.
Solution: Place your orchids near east or west-facing windows where they can receive gentle morning or afternoon light. Use sheer curtains to diffuse harsh sunlight.
Signs of Too Much Light: Yellow or scorched leaves indicate excessive light.
Signs of Too Little Light: Dark green, limp leaves suggest insufficient light.

Watering
Ideal Watering: Orchids prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
Solution: Water once a week, but adjust based on the season and humidity levels. In drier conditions, you may need to water more frequently. Use room-temperature water and avoid getting water on the leaves or crown (where leaves meet the stem).

Watering Frequency
Typical Schedule: Most orchids need to be watered once every 7–10 days, but this can vary based on environmental conditions.
High Elevation Consideration: In drier, high-altitude environments like the Rocky Mountains, you may need to water more frequently, such as every 5–7 days.
